Packing Dishes and Glassware

Packing dishes and glassware for a storage unit requires careful preparation to ensure they remain intact and undamaged over time. Start by gathering the right supplies: sturdy boxes, packing paper or bubble wrap, packing tape, and labels. Avoid using newspaper as the ink can transfer to your items. Wrap each dish and glass individually, using generous amounts of paper or bubble wrap to cushion them. Plates should be packed vertically, like records, with padding between each one to prevent pressure cracks. Glassware, such as cups and stemware, should be wrapped and placed upright in boxes with dividers if possible.

Once everything is wrapped, line the bottom of each box with a thick layer of padding for extra shock absorption. Heavier items should go on the bottom, with lighter ones on top to avoid crushing. Fill any empty spaces with crumpled paper or foam peanuts to prevent shifting during transit or while in storage. Avoid overpacking boxes, as this increases the risk of breakage. Clearly label each box with its contents and mark it “FRAGILE” on all sides. If you’re stacking boxes in the storage unit, keep fragile ones at the top and avoid putting heavy items on top of them.

When placing boxes in the storage unit, choose a climate-controlled storage unit. Consider placing the boxes on pallets or shelving to keep them off the ground. Organize your unit so that fragile items are easily accessible and not buried under other boxes. Taking the time to pack dishes and glassware correctly not only protects your belongings but also provides peace of mind while they’re in storage.
