Pro Tips for Moving into a Self Storage Unit:

Whether you’re downsizing, moving, or just need to make some space, it is likely that you might need to set some of your personal items aside in a storage unit. See below for some helpful tips for moving into a self storage unit.

 1. Decide what you would like to stow away in your unit

When you are deciding whether to keep an item in your current home or to move it into storage, ask yourself “Do I need this item right now, or do I need it later?” Holiday decorations, furniture, books, or clothing are just a few examples of things you can store. Carefully consider each item before choosing to store it.

2. Make a list of what you will be putting into the storage unit

It’s a good idea to jot down a list of the things that you will be stowing away in your storage unit. It can be easy to forget what you put into the unit, especially after time passes. Put in writing what you place in storage and keep that note in a safe place where you can easily find it. That way, you can check your list before having to search through a unit full of items.

3. Use clear storage containers instead of boxes

There are a few reasons why boxes aren’t the best tool to hold your belongings while they are stored away in a unit. Firstly, it’s a lot easier to see what inside clear plastic bins. There will be no need to take too much time hunting down an item if you can see what is inside the boxes. Also, airtight boxes will keep your special belongings in great condition for the entirety of their stay at Eagle Self Storage!

4. Label your containers

One of the most helpful things to do with your storage containers is to label them. Label each container with a specific description so you can easily find your items later. It’s easy to forget which items are in which box, especially after your items have been in your unit for a long period of time. The more boxes you have, the more labels you will need. Some examples of good label descriptions are “utensils, bowls, and plates” instead of simply, “kitchen items.”

5. Clean all your belongings before storing them

The last thing you need when you’ve gone to retrieve an item from storage is for it to smell musty. To make sure this isn’t the case, thoroughly clean each item before placing it in your containers. Wipe down the surface of each item so that it is clean and ready to store.

6. Strategically place your items in the unit

Consider your items before you place them in your unit. Put heavier items on the bottom, so that small, more fragile items are safe. It can also be helpful to put items that you may need sooner than other items in the front of your unit. Next, disassemble large items so that you can make more room in your unit. For example, take-apart beds. The more room you make, the more space you have.
